Harvest for Hunger

Harvest for Hunger was established in January of 2007 as a Hands On Committee. Our original goal was to organize donations by the Rotarian membership of non-perishable food or personal care items throughout the entire year. The Hands-On part included having Rotarians actually serve at the Salvation Army's soup kitchen so as to bring them close to the people who benefit from the collections and to demonstrate why the work of our committee is so important.
Another goal is reaching out to the community - not only as recipients of our work but in inviting the community to become partners with us in reaching out to others. So rather than running a food drive throughout the year and relying on donations strictly from Rotarians, we decided to hold an annual (or semi-annual) food drive for participation from the greater community. We have also partnered with the FlatBread Pizza Company and the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center, both of which donate a portion of their proceeds to Harvest for Hunger.
