Jeremy Alex Fund - Mission Statement
click to print this pageprint this page

The Jeremy Alex Fund was established by the Alex Family and the Rotary Club of Portsmouth in memory of Jeremy Alex.  Jeremy had many life interests, including chess, snowboarding, gardening, reading, travel and music.  For most of his adult life he struggled with addictions.  In 2004, at the age of 28, Jeremy disappeared into the woods of Maine.

The mission of the fund is to provide children with enriching experiences that may help guide them as they mature and are confronted by the pressures and choices of young adulthood.

CRITERIA

In selecting projects to be funded, a number of criteria will be considered by the Jeremy Alex Fund Committee.  The relative importance of the criteria considered by the Committee may vary from project to project and from one year to the next.  In addition, the specific criteria may change or evolve over time as the Committee’s interests change or evolve.  The Committee should review the criteria at least annually.

As the impact of an enriching experience on a child’s life is neither quantifiable nor measurable, the criteria should serve as guidelines for project selection and not as measures in and of themselves.

Initially, each project may be reviewed in terms of:

     1. The interests of the Alex Family.  Projects that are of interest to the family of Jeremy Alex will be considered.

     2. The support of an existing organization.  Projects that have the support and active involvement of an established and existing organization will be considered, especially those where synergies may be created and/or maximized.

     3. The long-term or short-term nature of the project.  Long-term or on-going projects may be considered as well as short-term or single projects.

     4. The number of children potentially impacted by the project.  Projects with the potential to impact many children may be considered as well as projects impacting a single child.

     5. The opportunity for Rotarian and Alex family involvement.  Projects that provide the opportunity for participation by members of the Rotary Club of Portsmouth and/or the family of Jeremy Alex will be considered.
