Founded in 1927, The Propeller Club of the United States is a grassroots, non-profit organization, whose membership resides throughout the United States and the world. It is dedicated to the enhancement and well-being of all interests of the maritime community on a national and international basis. The Propeller Club aggressively promotes the maritime industry through many of its programs and partnering with other similar organizations. Our goal is to educate legislators and the public as to the importance and necessity of all waterborne commerce.

PORT OF PORTSMOUTH

Propeller Club

PO Box 1436

Portsmouth, NH 03802-1436

The Portsmouth branch is a thriving club of about 125 members.  Dinner meetings during the winter feature speakers on a wide range of topics related to the sea, to ships, the Portsmouth waterfront, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the US Coast Guard and the maritime industry as a whole.

Membership is welcome to anyone with an interest in maritime activities, commerecial or otherwise. Our members include Piscataqua River pilots, tugboat owners and operators, owners of waterfront restaurants, president of the local marine museum, and the operators of many waterfront terminals, as examples.

The Bake Team is but one subcommittee of the Club, but the one that is the most fun on one hand, and the most work on the other. We put on around a dozen bakes each year for local organizations, and the net proceeds from these bakes go to support local maritime-related activities such as scholarships to cadets at  the Maine Maritime Acadamy, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and local marine-oriented activites such as Odiorne Park Science Center, to name just a few. In 2005 other special bakes were put on for a wedding rehearsal dinner, and for the National Convention of the Propeller Club of the United States, which happened to be meeting in Boston.

Rotarians who belong to the Portsmouth Propeller Club include Fred Pettigrew, Diane and Leonard Seagren, Hank Downey, Ken Roberts and several others.  Fred is one of the "fathers" of the Bake Team.  The Bake Team put on our Lobster Bake at the Portsmouth Rotary  for many years.
