Top of the Week!

Special Double Issue

Due to some delays in publishing, we are sending out a special double Rotary Log Issue of the Club Bulletin.  Hope you enjoy and we will try harder in the future to get the Bulletin out on time.  Cheers!

Salvation Army Haunted by Kind Rotarians

Rotarians were at it again, serving dinner at the Salvation Army, and on Halloween Night to boot. Thanks to all who helped. If you would be interested in helping out at the next dinner service, contact Sara Treacy.

Thanksgiving is Less than Two Weeks Away!

That's right kids, turkey day is upon us and we still need turkey cookers and pie bakers.  If you can help with either, please contact Priscilla MacInnis.

Also, if you are cooking a turkey, pick-up is at next week's meeting.  If you cannot make the meeting, contact Priscilla to make arrangements to pick yours up.

Rotary Social

Don't forget about our upcoming Rotary Social to be held at Mombo, 66 Marcy Street, Portsmouth.  The social runs from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. There will be a cash bar and there is a suggested donation of $10 to cover the cost of food.

See you there!

Rotary Log for October 26, 2017
Rotary Log for October 26, 2017

The crowd arrived with energy in anticipation of a hoot of a meeting.  President Ben opened with the ringing of the bell.  This was followed by the Pledge.  Next, Al Lantinen led us in the patriotic song with no members taking a knee.  Today’s Greeter, the affable Rich Greulich, led out the Four-Way Test.  And Senor John Rice, Ye Editor de Bitácora por excelencia, offered the Invocation.

There were numerous Guests and visiting Rotarians.  President Ben noticed that long-time member Bob Field was in the audience again this week.  Very nice to see!

Announcements

As is the custom in our extraordinarily engaged Club there were a plethora of announcements.  The Prez invited any member so inclined to attend monthly board meetings at the Service Credit Union boardroom.  They are held the first Wednesday of the month at 11:45.  The lunch is very good, and free, owing to the generosity of our friends at that institution.

Joannie Dickinson gave an Interact Club update. That vibrant group is looking for Flash Mob dancers at the Halloween parade.  Past-President Tony Delyani will be glad to fill you in on what that entails.

The ever-present and highly-achieving Rotarian, Leo Gagnon, pointed out the sign-ups for the upcoming Christmas Tree Sale.  He reminded us that all members are expected to do three shifts, unless they have special circumstances.

The Thanksgiving Holiday arrives before that, however.  For 46 consecutive years our club will be serving dinner at a festive Jarvis Center, and with home deliveries.  Priscilla MacInnis, the Committee Chair, and another Club Superstar, requested volunteers to cook turkeys, bake pies, and serve on Thanksgiving Day.

New Member Induction

Adding a new member to our club is always a special occasion.  Today, Basil Richardson took the microphone to welcome Judy Loto, who offered very gracious introductory remarks.  Welcome to the Club, Judy!

The Annual Poetry Hoot

Master of Ceremonies David Holden turned out a record number of poets and reciters for this edition of the Poetry Hoot.  Al Lantinen led off with an amusing play on the poem “Nevermore.” We were also entertained by the likes of President Ben, and Judy Ringer, who read a poem by her mother. Steve Taylor, Paris Khavari, and Jim Rini, each recited a wide range of enjoyable, thoughtful selections.

Stanford Cross read two short poems of his own creation.  Not to be outdone, Peg Millar composed an original on the spot and commandeered Justin Finn to step to the podium.  Our newest Rotarian, Judy Loto, quickly established herself as a Not Ready for Prime Time Player. She offered a pair of clever self-penned works.

Tricia Cummings always writes something for the Hoot. In the Halloween spirit, she donned a black pointed witch’s hat, which some call a heretic’s cap.  Tricia…?

Of course, it isn’t a poetry hoot without a limerick about the “Man from Nantucket.”  Leonard Seagren took the chance, entertaining but offending no one.  A fine line was walked by the next reader, Larry Grey, with his offering on plastic surgery and liposuction.  However, he had redeemed himself in advance with a very touching poem about his dearly departed dog.

The usually funny, often quirky, James Petersen certainly didn’t disappoint. He concocted an unusual, thinly-disguised politically-inspired poem.

However, the very best was saved for last. Basil Richardson offered tongue-in-cheek rhyming couplets as a back-handed complement to our Poetry Hoot Producer Extraordinaire. It was a fun meeting, Dave.  Well done!

Respectfully submitted, Neal Ouellett

Rotary Log for November 2, 2017
Rotary Log for meeting of November 2, 2017

This week we were all greeted by very cute guests: the newest litter of “Hero Pups.”  John Rice led us in song and Mark, The Four Way Test. John then gave a lovely invocation.

Guests included the daughters, girlfriends and wives of our club members. Oh, and the puppies! Caitlin Burke was put on seven day notice.

Club Announcements

District Governor Dave reminds us that the five district conference is coming up May 4-6, 2018 at the Mt. Washington Hotel. There are a number of great guest speakers already lined up. Travis Roy, the former BU hockey player, is one of them. Our club is underwriting his presentation. James Petersen encouraged members to join him, President Ben and the other “old crusty members” that have signed up to attend. But the group needs more “youth and women” since only one brave female has committed.

Priscilla is recruiting turkey cookers. She needs 14 more for this year’s Thanksgiving meal…Joanie  is asking members to bring canned goods to this weeks’ meeting…Leo  reminds  everyone to sign up for Christmas tree sales. He also explained the perks of being a day captain.

The Program:

This weeks’ speaker was introduced by Priscilla. She met Laura Barker a few years ago through their mutual love of all things dog. Laura has a background in animal rescue. Her son was wounded in Afghanistan and spent four months at a Virginia hospital. Baker was able to see firsthand the help and support therapy dogs give to veterans struggling with PTSD and anxiety.

In the past, Laura had trained only a couple of dogs a year. She soon wanted to do more. She realized that organizations that provide veterans with emotional support dogs charge a lot. Thus she created “Hero Pups.” The Non Profit connects dogs that she and other volunteers have specially trained with veterans and first responders.

Laura and her team are not just playing with puppies, though. They provide an ear to those that may need someone to listen. They also recently sent supplies to shelters in areas that had been hit hard by hurricanes. That is how she came back with the litter of puppies that we enjoyed socializing with.

“Hero Pups” is always in need of volunteers who can help them provide support to more veterans and first responders.

Respectfully submitted, Suzanne Rapoza
